Gary Slagel was mayor of Richardson, Texas for 20 years (from 1991 to 2011) and he’s also sat on the board of DART for about ten years. Personally, I think he’d make a good Congressman. I would definitely prefer him to someone like Colin Allred, who has spent two terms doing nothing because he knows he’s too liberal for the current 32nd district.
Slagel is the type of candidate who, if he had run 10 or 15 years ago, would have been the automatic front runner. I don’t know how much name recognition he’s going to have since he’s been out of office for ten years, though.
And, of course, the elephant room is redistricting. With Texas getting two new seats and Allred undoubtedly lobbying for a seat that will be safely Democratic, who knows what the 32 will look like a year from now?
