Allen West is officially running for governor of Texas. He will be challenging Greg Abbott in the Republican primary. I’m not sure why.
I would argue that West probably do deserve some credit for giving Texas Republicans a pretty good election night in 2020. Of course, he also suggested that the red states should secede from the union after the Supreme Court rightfully rejected Ken Paxton’s ludicrous election lawsuit, showing the exact same instincts that caused the Texas suburbs to move away from the GOP in the first place.
West says that he will be running to the right of Greg Abbott, which is interesting since I don’t think anyone has ever accused Abbott of being a secret liberal. I imagine West will get a lot of attention from the press, who is always interested in highlighting any Republican with a history of making incendiary statements. But I will be shocked if Abbott comes anywhere close to losing his primary to him.
